Café Jaya unveils a series of new steps toward making sure that this popular coffee house is an organization that supports fair trade. These new initiatives support a movement toward a proactive approach toward global trade that protect small farmers.
Last
month, Café Jaya discovered that some of its international suppliers were not
following fair trade guidelines. Café
Jaya’s CEO, Michael Richards reacted quickly and transparently to public and
employee concerns by adding detailed information to Café Jaya’s website
regarding the company’s plans for weeding out global suppliers not following
fair trade guidelines.
In
a recent Forbes interview, Café Jaya CEO explained that the organization with
continue to grow with no foreseen plans for employee layoffs in the near
future. Café Jaya CEO included several
statements explaining that growth will continue to happen but that the way it
happens is what is important. “New trade
initiatives will not only project our interest but also our values,” said
Richards.
Fair Trade Coffee
is a global challenge for Café Jaya
Today’s culture has a global moral compass
that has begun to really if question that cup of coffee that they had this
morning is a bargain or is it exploitation as consumers begin asking what
percent of profits of the price of their cup of coffee really goes to
the farmers in developing countries.
Small farmers grow coffee in the tropics of developing countries that often have unusually huge external debts that make them eager to export products at any price in order to get hard currency. The coffee-growing countries are forced into competition and make more coffee.These farmers with limited or no cash reserves may walk away from coffee crop sales with not enough profit to repay debt to repay debts or maintain any standards of living as coffee prices still increase but income generated by farmers steadily declined.

Café Jaya will takes steps to improve supply chain management by organizing a group of nonpartisan third party verifiers that will perform random supplier monitoring for fair trade violations. This new third party will be called the “Fair Trade Accountability Watchers” will be trained and educated on core trade principles and will conduct peer visit to farms with recognized schemes for supplier monitoring and reporting.

Café Jaya on World Fair Trade Day, May, 14, 2015
Café
Jaya is giving away a small cup of coffee on World Trade Day, May 14, 2016 for
agents for change. Café Jaya has joined
forces with the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO) to help promote fair trade
by offering a small coffee to anyone that goes to CafeJaya.com to
download Café Jaya’s app and adds a picture of himself or herself under the
website caption “agent for change.”

you to party, “How to organize a Fair Trade Day Event in your community.”
Richards explains that a stronger
alliance with the WFTO is one of the many steps that Café Jaya is taking to
ensure new fair trade initiatives continue to move forward and evolve to create
the greatest impact for the fight against poverty and exploitation. World Fair Trade Day always falls on the
second Saturday in May, celebrated in over 75 countries as event that not only
provides fun but also educate by helping to improve the livelihoods and
communities of the farmers that trade coffee.
